BEGINNERS INTRODUCTION
TO SAILING* - 1 or 2 days.
You will learn ...
- Nautical terms. English being the language of the
Sea, it is essential to use the correct terminology
to communicate safe, quickly and effectively.
Examples: mast, boom, mainsail, headsail, halyards,
sheets, starboard, port side and so on.
- about, safety at sea, use of life jackets, fire
extinguishers, first aid kit, suitable clothing and
more.
Then we’ll go sailing.
You will learn...
- how to observe from which direction the wind
comes and the current and what to do with that
information
- how to keep an eye on the weather.
- how to steer the boat straight into the wind, and
hoist the sails.
- your points of sailing, ergo your wind sailing
angles
- how to tie some important knots, figure of eight,
bowline, sheetbend, and more.
- how the sails work
- sailing upwind, tacking (turning the boat around
through the wind), sailing on a reach,
gibing (turning the boat around with the wind)
- to get away and return to the mooring.
- how to make a simple passage plan.
- how to use a whinch, basic compass reading, basic
right of the way rules.
- how to handle a Man Over Board situation.
90% of the course we’ll do whilst on the boat, 10% you’ll learn
on shore.
COMPETENT CREW* - 3 days.
As above but you will learn more, we’ll go into more details and
above all, you’ll get more practice.
You will learn some chart work, rigging and
de-rigging the boat, anchoring,
use of the engine, navigating the boat under power,
heaving to, and how to use safely a dingy.
When you have some experience already, the Learn to
Sail course can be shortened to 2 days.
CUSTOMIZED SAILING TUNE UP COURSE*
For those who are honest.
For example:
-
you have been sailing a lot but always with good
sailors around you, what do you really know?
What do you want to know? Tell us, we’ll customize a day or more, until
you feel confident on your own.
- you bought a boat, in time, but a little to quick, you find out
that skippering a boat is a wee bit more complicated
than finishing a YYA theory course, after having had
some near escapes,
you take up golfing again. Your yacht stays in the marina like 80% of the
yachts world wide
We’ll learn you some tricks and short cuts, on your own boat, so you can
enjoy it all better.
- it is a long time ago since you have sailed, you
are rusty or very corroded, don’t worry, just be
honest.
- you sail a lot with your family, now your kids
want to race, you know nothing about racing, but
want to keep them on aboard. Don’t you
worry, together we’ll sort that problem out, great fun.
- a new (girl)friend has entered your life, she does
not like sailing, “is that You, the Sea, or True?”,
we’ll talk and sail about it.
REGATTA RACE SAILING COURSE – minimum 3 days
This course is done during an actual Regatta,
from start to finish, trimming, boat handling, it’s
all about speed and tactics.
Don’t sail in dirty air, don’t lose the pack to
early, covering other boats, always tack between the
mark and your direct competitor.
How and where to start, the racing rules.
Trimming the boat for racing, get all the weight
out.
Where and why to sit there and not somewhere else.
Great fun, good camaderie, and the traditional
finish beer afterwards.
